What is Somato-Emotional Release (SER)?
Another layer to Craniosacral Therapy healing is the Somato-Emotional Release (SER) process. Soma means, “the body”. It is said that ,“The Tissue Remembers Everything”. SER is a process that helps release trapped emotional energy and components to facilitate the discharge of trauma and injury.
The body frequently retains an emotional imprint of physical injury, especially when coupled with intense feelings. These emotional components can of themselves inhibit healing and release. Emotions can be trapped along with the trauma in the tissues, as well as memories around situations that were stored at the time.
When you are ready, these can start to surface in order to be released. It usually is not a reliving of the event, but rather a bringing-it-to-your-attention process, where a memory or aspect needs to be looked at, better understood, and considered for what benefits and lessons it brings at the current time. This can be very healing by allowing a “knot” in the physical-emotional-mental-spiritual (PEMS) system to get untied, released, and bring relief. A therapist trained in this process can assist in helping you clarify your experience without imposing their beliefs or personal viewpoints into the session. Feel free to ask your therapist any questions you may have about this process.
